“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” –Roald Dahl
If you’re looking for writing inspiration to inform your next novel, chances are you won’t have to look very far. Many of the best stories come from personal experiences in the author’s life and it can be easy to find the spark of a story almost anywhere around you. Here are four great places to begin the hunt.
4 Ways to Find Writing Inspiration
- Ask Yourself Big Questions
You may be putting off thinking about some of the bigger questions in life, but doing so can actually improve your writing! A great place to start is by asking yourself things you normally wouldn’t; ideally about bigger rhetorical thoughts. This can be helpful to do with a friend or relative if you’re unsure where to begin.
- Visit a Public Place
Sometimes one of the best ways to find writing inspiration is in those around you. Spend the day at a park, mall or coffee shop watching people and their routine interactions. Observe the way strangers meet or lovers look at each other and try and determine their motives and plans for the day. You just might find your new main character.
- Take a Walk Outdoors
Not only does nature provide inspiration and rejuvenation, but walking outdoors can help you do some setting research, especially if your novel will be taking place outside. It’s important to craft scenes where you show instead of tell, and spending some time outside can help you get in touch with the subtle nuances of nature.
- Look Through Your Old Journals
Most writers keep some sort of journal or diary to jot down notes and daily activities. Take a look through your old ramblings to see if there is a situation or problem that you could flesh out into a story. Another great place to find writing inspiration is a dream journal, if you keep one.
Asking big life questions, observing others in public locations, taking a step out into nature and looking to your past can all help you come up with great new novel ideas. For more writing inspiration, read other articles on my blog today.
